End of the Spanish Reconquest - 1492

On this day, the kingdom of Granada falls under the Christian forces of Elizabeth and Ferdinand, the Catholic kings. As a result, the Arabs lose the last stronghold in the Iberian Peninsula. Throughout the thirteenth century, the armies of Aragon and Castile forced the Arabs to settle in southern Spain and Granada prospered as the great Moorish bastion. The kingdom flourished for the next 200 years until the late 19th century. XV. Internal tensions, as well as a consolidated and strengthened Spanish monarchy, marked the end of almost 800 years of Arab civilization in Spain. On January 2, 1492, King Boabdil surrendered in the city of Granada and in 1502 the Spanish crown ordered the Moors to convert to Christianity. In 1609, the last un Christianized Arabs were expelled from the country.
