Military regime
Between 1964 and 1985, Brazil experienced a period of military dictatorship, under which direct elections to the most important positions of the executive power, such as those of president and governor, were suspended. During this period, the presidency of the republic was occupied only by the military. Under the military regime, individual and collective freedoms were almost entirely suppressed. Many of the opposition leaders had their political rights extinguished. The press remained under censorship. Thousands of opponents to the regime were arrested. Many of them were tortured. Hundreds died under torture and thousands had to leave the country to escape repression.
