Galileo Galilei

1263 - Born D. Afonso, son of Alfonso III of Portugal, and brother De D. Dinis, against whom he would rebel.
1291 - Born d. Alfonso IV, son of D. Dinis and d. Isabel (Santa Isabel).
1587 - Maria Stuart, Queen of Scotland, is beheaded by order of Isabel I of England.

Johannes Fabricius is born (died in 1615 at the age of 29). Dutch astronomer who may have been the first sunspot observer.
1634 - D. Theodosius is born, son of D. João IV and D. Luísa de Gusmão.

1642 - Dies in Florence, Italy, Galileo Galilei (born 15/02/1564). Italian naturalist philosopher, astronomer, and mathematician who made fundamental contributions to the motion sciences, astronomy, materials strength, and the development of the scientific method.
1725 - Dies Peter the "Great" of Russia, succeeded on the throne by his wife, Catherine.
1825 - The French writer Jules Verne is born.
1861 - Formation of the Confederate States of America and beginning of the war of secession.
1921 - Dies in Lisbon, the singer Francisco de Andrade.
1926 - British biologist William Baterson, one of the creators of genetics, dies.
1933 - The Portuguese mathematician Gomes Teixeira dies.
1935 - Granted the first US patent for a spectrophotometer, was issued to Professor Arthur C. Hardy of Wellesley, this equipment was called by him a "photometric apparatus". Its creation was an electronic device capable of discovering two million different color shadows and making a permanent record of the results.
1937 - Franchise troops take over the city of Malaga with Italian help.

1962 - Incorporation into the Portuguese navy navy of the ship Escola Sagres, the second with this name.
1965 - Dies, exiled in Brazil, the Portuguese writer Tomas Ribeiro Colaço.

1868 - Sir Frank (Watson) Dyson, a prominent British astronomer, is born.
1973 - Archbishop Makarios is proclaimed president of Cyprus for the third time.
The Luna probe (Soviet Moon Lander / Rover) is launched.
1974 “Three of the skylab space lab astronauts return to Earth after setting the 84-day orbit record.
1989 - An American aircraft of the Independent Air Corporation crashes on the Azorean Island of Santa Maria as it lands, killing 138 passengers and seven crew members on board.
